Environmentalists mistakenly gave up on government some years back.
In light of the climate crisis and a new administration coming to
Washington, this is a good time for a mind change on the matter.
As a shockingly effective Secretary of Resources for California in the
early '80s, Huey Johnson proved how much lasting good can be
accomplished by intelligent and integrated policy at the state level.
His subsequent study of brilliant national green programs in New
Zealand and The Netherlands led to his current work persuading other
governments---such as Mexico and the US---to adopt deep, long,
comprehensive green programs operating with the full force of law.
"Green Planning at Nation Scale," Huey Johnson, Cowell Theater,
Fort Mason, San Francisco, 7pm, FRIDAY, October 3. The talk starts
promptly at 7:30pm. Admission is free (a $10 donation is always
welcome, not required).
Winner of the Sasakawa Environment Prize from the UN in 2001, Huey
Johnson founded the Trust for Public Land in San Francisco and
currently is president of Resource Renewal Institute.
Note: This week Neal Stephenson's novel, ANATHEM, based in part on
Long Now's Clock, appeared for the first time on the New York Times
fiction best-seller list---at No. 1. Video of Neal reading from the
book at Long Now's launch for it on Sept. 12 may be seen [1]here.
(Long Now [2]members can see an edited video of the whole evening.)
