Chronicle of Higher Education, 8.6.6
Amid all the hopes that nanotechnology inspires, researchers have for
several years been warning that some nanoparticles could harm people and
the environment. A recent paper in Nature Nanotechnology, for example,
suggested that certain nanotubes affect the lining of the lungs in much
the same way that asbestos fibers do.
The House of Representatives passed legislation on Thursday that could
enhance research into the health and environmental effects of
nanomaterials. In its reauthorization of the National Nanotechnology
Initiative, Congress directed the White House to develop a plan for health
and environmental research, with clear goals and budgets. The presidents
budget requests for the 2009 fiscal year include $1.5-billion for research
in nanotechnology, but the plan would set aside only $76-million (5
percent) for safety research.--Richard Monastersky
