[40]China wants 100 Westinghouse AP1000 operating or under construction by
2020

[41]China wants to have 100 of Westinghouse Electric Co.'s nuclear
reactors in operation or under construction by 2020 -- more than
double what was anticipated. The Westinghouse AP1000 are being scaled
up to 1700 MW and some of the ones already being built for China are
[42]1250MW designs, which will be followed by 1400MW designs and then
the 1700MW versions. If China follows through on these and other
nuclear plans they should have 200GW of nuclear power completed by
2025. This would be double what the USA has now.

[50]Uranium reserves have increased 17% since the last Red Book report
The new economical reserve estaimate worldwide is now around 5.5
million tonnes of uranium. the category of uranium that could be
expected to be found based on the geologic characteristics of known
resources has grown by 500,000 tonnes to 10.5 million tonnes. The data
comes from Uranium 2007: Resources, Production and Demand - often
known as the Red Book - published every two years by the OECD Nuclear
Energy Agency (NEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
IAEA projections for the future of nuclear power see it expanding from
372 GWe today to 509-663 GWe by 2030. Such growth would cause an
increase in uranium demand from 66,500 tonnes per year to between
94,000 and 122,000 tonnes. The NEA concluded that "currently
identified resources are adequate to meet this expansion," noting that
advanced reactors and the reprocessing and recycling of uranium "could
increase the long-term availability of nuclear energy from a century
   to thousands of years."

[88]This is a different approach to the approximate invisibility work.
[89]Regular silica and silicon can be used to make such a carpet.
According to them, the carpet would work across the spectrum of
visible light, something no other cloaking scheme has yet been able to
achieve. Most modern schemes are based on "metamaterials", materials
possessing carefully crafted internal structures that can alter the
path of light. Pendry says that his idea, though seems complex, is
   actually fairly simple.
The researcher says that the material can bend light by different
amounts at different points, much as a heated column of air can cause
   the horizon to shimmer.
"It's basically just an attempt to make a controlled mirage," Nature
   magazine quoted him as saying.
The researchers said that a carpet based on their idea would actually
look highly reflective, much like a mirror. That would make the
carpet, as well as anyone hiding under it, pretty conspicuous unless
it was laid down on a mirrored surface.
"(Even then) You wouldn't want to use it to hide people or anything
really big," Pendry said. Scientists, however, believe that the carpet
would be an "important step toward making the dream of invisibility
true", and would probably lead to some useful technologies.

[110]Dwave showing some experimental proof of quantum coherence matching
Landau Zener Transitions for their quantum computer

Dwave Systems is a company that is trying to make commercial quantum
computers is solidifying the theoretical and experimental evidence
that they have in fact created quantum computers. Dwave should be
releasing quantum computers with thousands of qubits before the end of
2008. A successful implementation of a true quantum computer will make
certain classes of tough math and science problems many billions of
times faster to solve. For example, the formula for calculating the
solving time can change from N**4 to N * square root of N where N is
the size of the problem to be solved. Bottom-line. A lot of
interesting and useful things that are not solvable now become
   solvable.
[111]Seth Lloyd is a co-author of the research paper and he leads a
quantum information research group at MIT
[112]Seth Lloyd has performed seminal work in quantum computing and
   quantum communication
[113]There are encryption schemes which are resistant to quantum
computers. So ecommerce can be made secure even if there are
successful quantum computers. These AQC (Adiabatic Quantum computers)
are not well suited to running the Shor algorithm for breaking
   encryption.
[114]Dwave Systems finds that the behavior of their qubit agrees to a
high degree of accuracy with theoretical predictions for Landau-Zener
transition probabilities for a double-well quantum system coupled to
1/f magnetic flux noise. They demonstrate that in this large
decoherence limit, the quantum mechanical behavior of this qubit is
the same (except for possible renormaliza-
tion of ¢) as that of a noise-free qubit, as long as the energy bias
sweep covers the entire region of broadening W.
[115]They have published a paper on these LZ transition experimental
tests. "Landau-Zener Transitions in an Adiabatic Quantum Computer"
   J. Johansson, M.H.S. Amin, A.J. Berkley, P. Bunyk, V. Choi, R. Harris,
M.W. Johnson, T.M. Lanting, Seth Lloyd, and G. Rose
The close agreement between theory and experiment for a single qubit
undergoing a LZ transition in the presence of noise supports the
accuracy of our dynamical models, including both the noise model and
the model of a single superconducting qubit that has been isolated
from its surrounding qubits in an adiabatic quantum computer. Future
experiments will test the behavior of multiple coupled qubits
undergoing a LZ transition in the presence of noise.
[116]Dwave's CTO Geordie Rose writes on Landau-Zener Quantum
   Computation

The probability of remaining in the ground state after an LZ
transition doesn't depend on the environment at all for broad
classes of QC-environment couplings. This is another facet of the
wonderful inherent noise-resistant properties of the AQC model, and
is a great example of how many-body physics can help reveal deep
     truths about quantum information theory.
While we continue to call the model AQC, I think it's fair to say
that maybe because of our solid-state physics bias we're thinking
of it more and more as LZQC.
