Meeting notice: The 080618 meeting will be held at 7:30 P.M. at the
Royal East (782 Main St., Cambridge), a block down from the corner of
Main St. and Mass Ave. If you're new and can't recognize us, ask the
manager. He'll probably know where we are. More details below.

Suggested topic: One way of handling the spectacular volumes of data
being thrown off by contemporary instruments is with the tools that go
under the term "visualization" -- systems that organize and present
zillions of data points such that humans can search and understand them
quickly. Another technique is to rely on the machines themselves to
discard the data that is "uninteresting". The first example I recall of
the latter was robot telescopes built to find and inform you of changes
in a given region of sky. A new case, at least new to me, is using
using robot microscopes to inspect a flow of biological cells, picking
out just the ones with interesting characteristics. Anne Carpenter will
be talking about these machines and their impact on cellular biology at
the Broad Institute on July 9th.

Legend:

"NSG" expands to Nanotechnology Study Group. The Group meets on the
first and third Tuesdays of each month at the above address, which
refers to a restaurant located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The NSG mailing list carries announcements of these meetings and little
else. If you wish to subscribe to this list (perhaps having received a
sample via a forward) send the string 'subscribe nsg' to
majordomo at polymathy.org. Unsubs follow the same model.
