Grey Thumb Meeting Reminder

Featuring a talk by Carlos Gershenson on the design and control of
self-organizing systems

When: 7:00pm Tonight, Monday, April 7, 2007
Where: The Asgard Irish Pub & Restaurant (350 Mass. Ave, Central
Square, Cambridge)
Who: All are welcome

Abstract:

Complex systems are usually difficult to design and control. There
are several particular methods for coping with complexity, but there
is no general approach to build complex systems. In this talk I will
present a methodology I developed during my PhD, which aids engineers
in the design and control of complex systems. This is based on the
description of systems as self-organizing. Starting from the agent
metaphor, the methodology proposes a conceptual framework and a
series of steps to follow to find proper mechanisms that will promote
elements to find solutions by actively interacting among themselves.

As a case study, I will present work and simulations on self-
organizing traffic lights. These are able to coordinate without
direct communication, following only local rules. The resulting
scheme greatly outperforms traditional methods, adapting to the
current traffic demand.

Bio:

Carlos Gershenson is a Mexican postdoctoral fellow working at the
New England Complex Systems Institute. He holds a PhD from the Vrije
Universiteit Brussel (2007), a MSc degree in Evolutionary and
Adaptive Systems from the University of Sussex (2002), and a BEng
degree in Computer Engineering from the Fundación Arturo Rosenblueth
in México. (2001). He has about fifty scientific publications in
journals, books, and conference proceedings. He has a wide variety
of academic interests, including self-organizing systems, artificial
life, evolution, complexity, cognition, artificial societies, and
philosophy. He is a contributing editor for Complexity Digest
(www.comdig.com)
