Grey Thumb Meeting

Featuring a talk by Brian Peltonen on ants and artificial life

When: 7:00pm Monday, November 5, 2007
Where: The Asgard Irish Pub & Restaurant (350 Mass. Ave, Central Square,
Cambridge)
Who: All are welcome

Since the first artificial life conference, ants have been considered by
many to be the unofficial mascot of the field. Brian Peltonen will discuss
why ants are so appealing to modelers and why an understanding of how their
complex behaviors arise from simple rules can help us understand other
emergent phenomenon.

Ants can find shortest routes, develop advanced offensive tactics, assess
the strength of potential threats and many other similarly complex tasks.
Amazingly, they do this without any supervisor or master plan. Brian will
discuss how local rules and responses make these behaviors possible.

He will also discuss his ongoing work simulating ants with tactile,
chemical, olfactory and visual systems in 3D environments.

Brian Peltonen is currently in the early stages of developing artificial
life applications for the consumer space. Previously, Brian worked as a
complexity model developer at Icosystem, where he built agent based
simulations of consumer behavior and optimized various systems using
genetic algorithms.
