Here's the paper the researchers wrote about it:

The reason they call it a "detector" instead of a "diode" is that
it's more like a nonlinear resistor with a v vs. i curve that's
symmetrical around zero. I can't tell from superficial reading
whether the gain is >1 or not.
It made me think of the "tickler" wires in crystal radios, but it's
not a junction sort of thing, it's just the characteristics of the
wire itself.
The video they made to show it off is so lame! (But it reminds me of
an AT&T demo of the song "Show Me!" from the King & I, being transmitted
by laser around 1970.)
