Grey Thumb Meeting
Featuring a talk by Mackenzie Cowell on the international genetically
engineered machine (iGEM) competition
When: 7:00pm Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Where: The Asgard Irish Pub & Restaurant (350 Mass. Ave, Central Square,
Cambridge)
Who: All are welcome
The international genetically engineered machine competition (iGEM) is
an annual event that challenges teams of undergraduates to apply the
principles of Synthetic Biology to build living machines from
standardized biological parts. More than 650 students from 23 different
countries participated in the most recent competition, and in this talk
Cowell will describe the foundations of Synthetic Biology and some of
the practical lessons learned about its application from the
competition, with a particular focus on the problems and benefits of
trying to engineer self-reproducing machines.
Mackenzie Cowell graduated in 2007 with a degree in Biology from
Davidson College and now organizes the iGEM competition at MIT. Besides
Synthetic Biology, Mac is also interested in the changing world of
scientific publication. Mac is on the steering committee of
OpenWetWare, an online community helping scientists share their work,
and is an active member of the MIT Free Culture chapter.
