Rosabeth Moss Kanter's book The Change Masters was named one of the
most influential business books of the century by Financial Times.
Through her books, talks, consultancy, and teaching at Harvard
Business School she has become a leading figure in the world of
organizational change. In her new book, America the Principled, and
in this talk she addresses the reverse question: What should NOT
   change?...

"Enduring Principles for Changing Times," Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Cowell
Theater, Fort Mason, San Francisco, 7pm, Friday, November 9. The
lecture starts promptly at 7:30pm. Admission is free (a $10 donation
   is always welcome, not required).

In my book The Clock of the Long Now, I ended my chapter on "The Long
View" with the following quotes from Kanter's 1997 book, On the
Frontiers of Management. She wrote that "people care about their
place in history when their own past is valued. During the era when
Yale College produced a large number of future CEOs of some of the top
   U. S. companies, the most popular major was history, not
economics.People take the long view when they perceive leaders as
trustworthy. [They] take the long view when they believe the rules of
the game are fair. They believe they will share equitably in the
returns. [They] take the long view when they have a deep understanding
of system dynamics. They see the connections between actions in one
place and consequences in another. They can therefore appreciate the
need for indirect long-term investments (whether research and
development, infrastructure repairs, or education)... People take the
long view when they feel a commitment to those who come after them.
They care about posterity---their children and other people's
children---and therefore see the need for actions to benefit the
   distant future."
