CALL FOR PAPERS: WORKSHOP ON THE ROLE OF DESIGN IN WEARABLE COMPUTING
   [8]http://www.ece.vt.edu/tlmartin/iswc07_design_workshop/index.html
   Important dates:
   Paper submissions due: August 15
Acceptance notification: No later than August 25
   Final versions due: September 16
   Workshop: October 1
Papers should be submitted in PDF format via e-mail to
   iswc_design_workshop [at] [9]vt.edu.
This workshop will provide a forum to discuss the role of design in
wearable computing. Wearable computing spans a broad range of
   interests
and expertise, not all of which can be adequately represented by a
technical paper in an IEEE Computer Society proceedings. As wearable
computing becomes more mainstream and if it is to continue becoming
   more
mainstream, it is important for ISWC to provide appropriate venues for
presenting the latest advances in textile, fashion, and industrial
   design.
The objective of this workshop is to come up with a set of
   recommendations
on what the appropriate venues should be and to discuss what the
   important
design issues are for wearable computing.
Potential topics for the workshop include but are not limited to the
   following:
     * How should design contributions be evaluated?
     * What should be the format(s) for a design submission and
       presentation?
     * How should these contributions be documented and archived,
       e.g. web site, video?
     * What guidance about the program committee's expectations should be
provided to designers who wish to submit a regular paper?
     * For design contributors who are in tenure-track academic
   positions,
what are their requirements in terms of building dossiers for
tenure and promotion? What are the requirements of designers at
start-ups? At design firms? In graduate school?
     * Is the difference between a design contribution and a technical
contribution simply an emphasis on wearable instead of an emphasis
       on computing?
     * Wearable computing has had some problems gaining legitimacy with
computing researchers; are there similar problems for designers?
     * What are the difficulties and benefits of bridging the cultural
gaps between disciplines in interdisciplinary wearable computing
projects? Are there good sets of case studies to illustrate these
   gaps
and how they can be overcome?
     * What are the important design issues for wearable computing? How
will addressing them advance wearable computing? How will
addressing them advance the particular area of design expertise,
e.g., how will e-textiles advance the field of textiles?

The intended audience for the workshop is those whose research
   emphasis is
on the design aspects of wearable computing, such as industrial
   design,
fashion, textiles, and applications, and at all career stages (e.g.
   grad
student, academics pre- and post-tenure, and industry).
Please submit a position paper of up to 5 pages on a topic relevant to
the workshop. Authors are encouraged to include examples of their
work to illustrate their position. Authors of accepted papers will be
expected to present the paper at the workshop and to participate in
   the
discussion of recommendations. Papers should be submitted in PDF
   format
   via e-mail to iswc_design_workshop [at] [10]vt.edu.
Papers submitted to the workshop must not be under review by any
other conference or publication during the review cycle, and must
not be previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere.
Accepted papers will be published in PDF format on the ISWC web site
CALL FOR ENTRIES: ISWC JURIED DESIGN EXHIBITION
   [11]http://www.iswc.net/exhibition.htm
   Submission deadline: August 15
   Acceptance notification: August 25

The International Symposium on Wearable Computers invites submissions
of original works of wearable computing for its 2008 Juried Design
Competition. Submissions may comprise any type of designed technology
for wearable computing, and designers are encouraged to submit
designed works of practical technology as well as works of art.
In this inaugural exhibition, submitted works may be new or may have
been reported previously at ISWC or other venues, as long as they are
the original work of the designer(s).
Designers are asked to submit an illustrated design statement,
detailing the work's concept, motivation, technological functionality,
and execution. Detailed images must illustrate the text. Submissions
will be evaluated by the jury panel for their following design
elements: concept, use of technology, execution, and communication.
Judging criteria are fully described below.
Design statement submissions should be in PDF format, and no more than
3 pages. Submissions should be made by e-mail to tlmartin [at]
[12]vt.edu. Accepted works will be exhibited at the ISWC 2008
conference, which will be held September 28-October 1 in Pittsburgh,
PA. Accepted authors will be asked prepare an explanatory poster to
accompany their work in the mounted exhibit. During the conference,
the jury will select three prizewinners based upon exhibited
   artifact(s) and explanatory poster.
     Submission deadline: August 15
     Acceptance notification: August 25

   Evaluation Criteria
Concept: How novel is the concept, approach, or application? How
insightful or surprising is the work? The work should exhibit depth of
understanding and insight, and display a thorough design process that
addresses the complete scope of variables and values relevant to the
articulated objective or use scenario of the work.
Technology: How innovative is the use of technology: have advances
been made in the use of standard tools for a new purpose? Have new
technologies been developed? What does the technology bring to the
wearer or the viewer in the wearable environment?
Execution: How professional and polished is the finished product?
Have appropriate or novel construction techniques been implemented?
How have standard hardware components been adapted for the wearable
   environment?
Communication: How well have the concept, novelty, and use of
technology been communicated? Is the idea and process evident in
   written and visual materials?
Submissions accepted for the competition will be evaluated on these
criteria by the judges at the conference, based upon the exhibited
   artifact(s) and an explanatory poster.
