Postdoctoral Research Position in Biorobotics
Neuromorphic Sensorimotor Integration for Legged Locomotion (NSILL)
Vacancy Reference No: 3008530
A 3-year research post is available with Dr. Barbara Webb's Insect
Robotics Group on the EPSRC funded project "Neuromorphic Sensorimotor
Integration for Legged Locomotion" (NSILL). The project is in
collaboration with Prof. Alan Murray of the Neural Networks Group,
School of Engineering and Electronics, and has as its aim the design,
simulation and hardware realisation of neural circuits for visual
depth extraction, adaptive gait control, and sensorimotor integration
and learning which will be implemented on a hexapod robot that will
predictively adapt its gait to complex terrain.
The available position will principally involve design and
construction (with workshop support) of a six-legged robot based on
insect models, including appropriate sensor mechanisms; developing the
robot interface to flexibly integrate software and hardware
controllers; and experimental evaluation of the control approaches. It
will also have direct input into the development of the control
models.
The candidate should ideally hold a PhD in robotics, motor control, or
a closely related field; and preferably have some familiarity with
neuroscience and computational modelling of biology, especially of
insects.
The preferred start date is April, 2008.
Initial inquiries should be addressed to Barbara Webb: bwebb at inf.ed.ac.uk
Salary Scale and Grade
The post is on the UE07 scale (27,466 - 32,796 GBP) with annual increments
and
full staff benefits. Placement for the post is according to experience and
qualifications.
