PSC Provides Major Support for Unprecedented Storm-Forecast Experiment
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PSC improved performance of the forecast model, automated the daily
runs and coordinated a dedicated high-bandwidth link: Spring on
the Great Plains brings one of nature's most awesome performances of
fierce weather, as the May 5th weekend in Kansas tragically
demonstrated. Many residents of Greensburg, Kansas credited the
National Weather Service, which gave a half-hour advance warning, with
preventing an even worse disaster. Nevertheless, tornados are
notoriously hard to predict, and better warnings -- hours in advance,
instead of minutes, with greater reliability in the prediction --
could save countless lives.

Supercomputer Shows That Nanolayers Have Turning Sense
------------------------------------------------------
A team of researchers from Jülich and Hamburg have discovered a
homochiral magnetic structure in thin metal layers: Physicists
from Research Centre Jülich and the University of Hamburg have
discovered that on the atomic level nature differentiates between the
image and mirror image of magnetic structures. With the aid of
computer simulations in Jülich and experiments in Hamburg, they
detected a so-called "homochiral" magnetic structure in a thin metal
layer, as described in an article published in the current edition of
the high-impact journal "Nature". There is no version with
mirror-image spin. The researchers found this surprising selectivity
very exciting since, on the one hand, it opens up a whole new research
area and, on the other hand, it may also lead to applications in
"spintronics", a promising field of future technology.

UCSD Selected to Design, Build Cyberinfrastructure for Ocean Observatories
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What we know about the world’s oceans comes largely from ship-based
scientists taking samples and making measurements at periodic
intervals. Now researchers led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography
at the University of California, San Diego will create a blueprint for
digital infrastructure that will allow ocean observatories to collect,
process and transmit data 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
