HP Names Dean of UIC, Prith Banerjee, as Director as Director of HP Labs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
HP has named Prith Banerjee, dean of the college of engineering at the
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), as senior vice president,
research, and director of HP Labs, effective Aug. 1. Banerjee will
report to Shane Robison, executive vice president and chief strategy
and technology officer. He replaces Richard H. Lampman, who is
retiring after 35 years of service with HP, including 25 years in HP
Labs. Lampman will remain at HP Labs through Banerjee’s starting date
to ensure an orderly transition.

Arctic Ice Retreating More Quickly Than Computer Models Project

Arctic sea ice is melting at a significantly faster rate than
projected by even the most advanced computer models, a new study
concludes. The research, by scientists at the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorado's National
Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), shows that the Arctic's ice cover is
retreating more rapidly than estimated by any of the 18 computer
models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in
preparing its 2007 assessments.

HP Lifts Guidance for Second Quarter Earnings, Revenue

HP today announced that it has raised its financial guidance for the
fiscal second quarter ended April 30. Based on preliminary data, HP
expects to announce on May 16 – when its second quarter results are
scheduled to be released – that it recorded revenue in the range of
$25.50 billion to $25.55 billion, non-GAAP diluted earnings per share
(EPS) in the range of $0.69 to $0.70, and GAAP EPS in the range of
$0.64 to $0.65. Non-GAAP diluted EPS estimates exclude after-tax costs
of approximately $0.05 per share, related primarily to the
amortization of purchased intangible assets.

MSC.Software Reports Q1 Results

MSC.Software Corporation today announced financial results for the
first quarter ended March 31, 2007. Total revenue for the first
quarter ended March 31, 2007 was $57.6 million compared to $67.4
million for the first quarter last year.  Software revenue for the
first quarter totaled $23.0 million compared to $29.3 million for the
first quarter last year. The 2006 first quarter included $1.3 million
of non-recurring PLM software revenue. The PLM business was sold in
March 2006. For the first quarter ended March 31, 2007, maintenance
revenue totaled $28.7 million and services revenue totaled $5.9
million, compared to $27.6 million of maintenance revenue and $10.5
million of services revenue for the first quarter last year. The 2006
quarter included $1.1 million of PLM services revenue.
