Subject: [Synthetic Biology] paper by Natalie Kuldell on education in
synthetic biology
Hello,
Natalie Kuldell from MIT has published a paper on educational efforts
in synthetic biology with particular focus on the sophomore biological
engineering lab class she teaches at MIT with Drew Endy.
All class materials for this course are available on OpenWetWare:
http://openwetware.org/wiki/BE.109:Systems_engineering
*course module on bacterial photography system developed by UCSF and UT-Austin
http://openwetware.org/wiki/20.109:Module_1
*genome engineering course module taught in Spring 2007
http://openwetware.org/wiki/20.109(F07):Module_1
*genome engineering course module taught in Fall 2007
I think she makes a great point that synthetic biology is NOT
interdisciplinary but rather a discipline in itself and discusses the
impact of that on educational efforts. Link and abstract below.
Thanks,
Reshma

Synthetic biology is an emerging engineering discipline that, if
successful, will allow well-characterized biological components to be
predictably and reliably built into robust organisms that achieve
specific functions. Fledgling efforts to design and implement a
synthetic biology curriculum for undergraduate students have shown
that the co-development of this emerging discipline and its future
practitioners does not undermine learning. Rather it can serve as the
linchpin of a synthetic biology curriculum. Here I describe
educational goals uniquely served by synthetic biology teaching,
detail ongoing curricula development efforts at MIT, and specify
particular aspects of the emerging field that must develop rapidly in
order to best train the next generation of synthetic biologists.
