HiCLAS1 Joint Venture Formation
-------------------------------
<b>Beta release of AERMOD-HPCS:</b> HiPERiSM Consulting, LLC, (Durham,
North Carolina) has linked with AS1MET Services (Blanco, Texas) to
form a joint venture, HiCLAS1, dedicated to bringing High Performance
Computing (HPC) capability to Environmental Modeling. The HiCLAS1
mission is to develop (or enhance) software and improve performance on
current and future computers for legacy Air Quality Models (AQM). This
joint venture brings half a century of unique experience in regulatory
modeling and high performance computing to focus on issues that will
meet the needs of the AQM community. There is a latent (and
suppressed) need for reduced time to solution in computer models of
environmental phenomena as model complexity has increased and regional
scope has expanded to meet ever-increasing demands from legislative
and policy requirements in support of legislation such as the Clean
Air Act (<a
href="http://www.epa.gov/oar/oaq_caa.html">www.epa.gov/oar/oaq_caa.html</a>).
It is in response to this requirement that HiCLAS1 is motivated to
attack the causes of performance limitations in legacy code currently
in use by modelers and regulatory personnel.

DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research Launches Webzine
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) in the
Department of Energys Office of Science this week launched a new
online publication highlighting a range of computational research
efforts supported by the office. The first issue of the magazine,
called ASCR Discovery, includes articles about how HPC is being used
to understand the role of turbulence in combustion, a look at a new
computational chemistry software framework, news from ASCR-supported
research at two universities, and a profile of MPI, the technology
developed at Argonne National Lab that is essential to parallel
computing. ASCR Discovery can be found at: <a

SGI Enables Fox Sports Australia to Meet Increased Bandwidth Demands
--------------------------------------------------------------------
<b>SGI Altix XE Servers Transcode Video Streams 2X Faster and SGI
InfiniteStorage Provides a Reliable Way to Archive.</b> To meet
anticipated bandwidth demands for two new 24/7 television channels,
Premier Media Group, operators of FOX SPORTS Australia, selected
technology from SGI to support its growth in digital program outputs.
SGI InfiniteStorage systems and SGI Altix XE ingest and transmission
servers are the backbone of Premier Media Group's complete digital
infrastructure for end-to-end D10/MXF operation. Installed in early
2004, the original SGI solution was purchased to overcome the workflow
restrictions of tape-based ingest. Due to SGI's highly scalable
architecture, Premier Media Group has been consistently -- and easily
-- adding to their infrastructure to support live ingest and
broadcast, SAN, archive and library management needs, as their growth
demands.

Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 Breaks a Teraflop
--------------------------------------------
Yesterday, Sun Microsystems announced new Sun SPARC Enterprise
servers, highly scalable virtualization/consolidation systems with
mainframe-class reliability for the open systems market. The new
servers are already demonstrating their performance leadership. The
Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000, using Sun Studio 12, topped the 1 TFLOP
barrier, delivering a score of 1.032 TFLOPS on the Linpack benchmark
(Highly Parallel Computing). This out-performs the best published
single system from IBM p5 595 (1.9GHz POWER5) by over 2X and tops the
high end single system Itanium 2 (1.6GHz/24MB) based box from HP
(Superdome, by nearly 38%).

Sun Grid Engine Helps Find Fat Gene
-----------------------------------
It's official; that Double Whopper with Bacon is not solely
responsible for your extra pounds. Scientists have identified the most
clear genetic link yet to obesity in the general population as part of
a major study of diseases funded by the Wellcome Trust, the UK's
largest medical research charity. People with two copies of a
particular gene variant known as FTO have a 70 percent higher risk of
being obese than those with no copies. The Sun Grid Engine (SGE) was
one of the enabling technologies in the work that produced the
discovery of a gene linked to human obesity.
